Digital Archive Japan / DAJ, Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915) German bacteriologist. Specialist in the fields of Haematology, Chemotherapy and Immunology. Shared Nobel prize for medicine or physiology with Mechnikov in 1908. Photograph COURTESY OF THE NOBEL FOUNDATION |
Digital Archive Japan / DAJ, Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927), Swedish physicist and chemist, 1903. Arrhenius work covered a wide range of subjects including immunology, cosmic physics and environmental issues. He discovered heat gain by the atmosphere due to carbon dioxide, predicting the greenhouse effect as early as 1896. Arrhenius won the Nobel prize for chemistry in 1903 for his theory of electrolytic dissociation. He was appointed Rector of the Nobel Institute in 1905. |
Peter Menzel/ASA / ASA, ARG_SCI_DNA_04_xs (1992) Durand Hospital Immunology Lab at the Durand Hospital. Roxana Cotisa performs HLA-ABC tests on blood lymphocyte sample after it was centrifuged from whole blood. DNA consists of two sugar- phosphate backbones, arranged in a double helix, linked by nucleotide bases. There are 4 types of base; adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). Sequences of these bases make up genes, which encode an organisms genetic information. The bands (black) on the autoradiogram show the sequence of bases in a sample of DNA. DNA Fingerprinting.
